Chin Augmentation

A nice chin brings balance to a face. Many patients do not focus on their chin when considering aesthetic surgery. Chin augmentation are often combined with other procedures such as, rhinoplasty, neck liposuction or facelifts.

When the chin is short or weak, it creates an imbalance causing the midface and nose to look larger. One way to conceptualize this is to think of the nose and chin as on opposite sides of a teeter-totter. When the chin moves backward, it makes the nose look larger. When the chin comes forward, it makes the nose look smaller (without touching the nose!). It is, therefore, often performed in conjunction with a rhinoplasty. Many patients who think their nose is too big have a weak chin.

A chin implant is also commonly done with a face or neck lift procedures. This helps create a more defined jaw line and again, improves balance.

Often times, liposuction of the neck is done with a chin augment. The liposuction can remove some of the fullness to help create a more angular look.

The anatomic synthetic chin implant is placed through a small incision in the crease under the chin (same place as facelift or liposuction incision). There is a layer on the bone that is elevated to create a pocket that just fits the implant. After the implant is placed, the layer of tissue contracts and secures the implant, much like shrink wrapping. Once healed, it is often difficult for patients to figure out what is implant and what is jaw bone.

Interestingly, people have a hard time figuring out that someone has had a chin implant. Everything just feels better to the observer when balance is observed.
