Tattoo Removal

In recent times, we have seen an explosion in the number of people getting tattoos. In the past, most tattoos were either for military personnel or associated with taboo cultures (gangs, prisoners, anti-social groups, etc) worn in defiance of society. Today, tattoos have become more commonplace. Studies have shown that about 25% of Americans between the ages of 18-50 have a tattoo (36% for ages 25-29). Peer pressure and the herd mentality have fueled this growth.

Unfortunately, for many, tattoo regret and remorse is a big problem. Years after your tattoo, you may not agree with the cultural statement you made earlier. One large study shows that over 50% of people regret their tattoo and want it removed. When married, that number jumps 70%.

For some, the stigma of the tattoo is undesired. Below are some of the many reasons that patient seek tattoo removal:

‘I can’t get a job with these tattoos.’

‘I just don’t want my kids to see these tattoos.’

‘Everybody stares at me as if I am a criminal.’

‘You have got to help me. They are going to take my scholarship away because of my tattoo.’

‘I thought I would be with Jenny forever, but it didn’t work out. Michelle hates it!’

‘I can’t get into the military because of my tattoos.’

Very Important!!

There is a significant risk for Hepatitis C associated with tattoos! A UT Southwestern study found that those that had a tattoo done at a commercial parlor were 9 times more likely to have Hep C than those without a tattoo. Commercially acquired tattoos account for more Hep C cases than IV drug abuse!

Hep C may result in cirrhosis of the liver and/or liver cancer. Nearly 4 million Americans are infected with Hep C. It is a quiet killer. The majority of patients experience no symptoms until years later with they develop cirrhosis or cancer.

For this reason, we recommend that you discuss getting a Hep C test with your Primary Care Provider.
